The Return of Commercial Whaling?

Commercial whaling could be just around the corner. This is very bad news for whales, many of which are still endangered or threatened.

Japan and Norway are trying to push through a weakened version of a Revised Management Scheme (RMS) for commercial whaling. If passed, their proposed RMS would lift the existing ban on whaling and weaken enforcement provisions. This, coupled with Japan’s ongoing efforts to buy the votes of many member nations, puts the 24-year commercial whaling moratorium at great risk.

We could see the rebirth of commercial whaling before 2010 is over. We cannot let this happen.
